Frogspawn Corals (Fimbriaphyllia divisa) are among the most popular LPS corals in the reef hobby. Their flowing tentacles and distinctive "frogspawn"-shaped tips create beautiful movement in the aquarium, making them a favourite centrepiece coral for many reef keepers.

Lighting

Frogspawn corals thrive under moderate lighting. While they can adapt to a range of light levels, excessive light may cause stress, while insufficient light can lead to reduced growth and colouration. Gradual acclimation is recommended when introducing them to a new tank.

Flow

Provide moderate, indirect water flow. The tentacles should sway gently in the current without being whipped around. Excessive flow can cause tissue damage, while too little flow may allow debris to accumulate between the branches.

Feeding

Although Frogspawn corals receive most of their energy from photosynthesis, they benefit from occasional feeding. Regular feeding can encourage faster growth and healthier, fuller polyp extension.

Placement

Frogspawn corals are best placed in the middle to lower sections of the aquarium where they can receive moderate light and water movement. Ensure they have plenty of room to expand, as their tentacles can extend well beyond their skeleton.

Water Quality

Stable water parameters are essential for long-term success. Good water quality and stability will help promote strong skeletal growth and vibrant colouration.

Tank Mates

Give Frogspawn corals adequate space from neighbouring corals. They can extend long sweeper tentacles and may sting nearby corals, especially at night. Most fish ignore Frogspawn corals, and they can often provide shelter for clownfish, although hosting behaviour varies between species.

Final Thoughts

Frogspawn corals are an excellent choice for reef keepers looking to add colour, movement, and visual impact to their aquarium. With moderate lighting, gentle water movement, stable water parameters, and occasional feeding, they are relatively easy to care for and can become a stunning focal point in any reef tank.
