Symphyllia Corals, often called Brain Corals, are prized for their large fleshy tissue, flowing appearance, and vibrant colours. They are generally hardy LPS corals that can become a stunning focal point in a reef aquarium when provided with stable conditions and proper placement.
LIGHTING
Moderate lighting is typically ideal for Symphyllia corals. Excessive light can cause the coral to become stressed or lose colour, while insufficient lighting may reduce growth and overall health.
When introducing a new specimen, it is best to acclimate it gradually to your aquarium's lighting conditions.
FLOW
Place Symphyllia in an area with low to moderate water flow.
They prefer a gentle, indirect flow that allows the fleshy tissue to move slightly without being blasted by strong currents. Excessive flow can cause tissue recession and prevent the coral from expanding fully.
FEEDING
Symphyllia receive much of their energy through photosynthesis but will benefit from occasional supplemental feeding. Target feeding once or twice per week can encourage faster growth, improved colouration, and fuller tissue expansion.
PLACEMENT
Symphyllia are best placed on the sand bed or lower areas of the aquarium where they can expand comfortably without rubbing against surrounding rockwork.
Allow plenty of space around the coral, as its fleshy tissue can expand significantly during the day and feeding periods.
WATER QUALITY
Stable water parameters are essential for long-term success.
Recommended parameters include:
Temperature: 24-27°C (75-81°F)
Salinity: 1.024-1.026 SG
Alkalinity: 8-9 dKH
Calcium: 400-450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250-1400 ppm
Nitrate: 2-15 ppm
Phosphate: 0.03-0.10 ppm
Consistency is more important than chasing exact numbers.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Symphyllia corals are a beautiful and rewarding addition to reef aquariums. Their vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and large fleshy appearance make them a standout feature in any reef tank. With moderate lighting, gentle flow, stable water parameters, and occasional feeding, Symphyllia can thrive for many years and become a true centrepiece of your aquarium.
