WYSIWYG - 8cm

Goniastrea corals are attractive LPS corals known for their vibrant colours, compact growth forms, and distinctive brain-like patterns. Often confused with Favia, Favites, and other brain corals, Goniastrea are generally hardy and well-suited to a wide range of reef aquariums.

Lighting

Low to moderate lighting is ideal for most Goniastrea species. They typically adapt well to a variety of lighting conditions, but like many LPS corals, should be acclimated carefully when introduced to higher light levels.

Flow

Low to moderate flow works best. Gentle, indirect water movement helps keep the coral clean while allowing the polyps to extend naturally.
Avoid strong, direct flow which may cause tissue recession or reduced polyp extension.

Placement

Goniastrea can be placed on the sand bed or in the lower to middle sections of the rockwork. Ensure the colony has enough room to grow and expand naturally.
As the coral matures, it may become more aggressive toward neighbouring corals.

Tank Mates

Goniastrea are generally considered semi-aggressive. Many species can extend sweeper tentacles after lights out and may sting nearby corals.
Allow adequate spacing between Goniastrea and neighbouring corals to prevent territorial disputes and tissue damage.

Final Thoughts

Goniastrea corals are colourful, durable, and rewarding additions to a reef aquarium. Their unique patterns and relatively forgiving care requirements make them suitable for both beginners and experienced hobbyists. With stable water conditions, moderate lighting, gentle flow, and occasional feeding, they can develop into beautiful colonies that add texture and colour to any reef display.
