WYSIWYG - 7cm
Favia and Favites, often called Brain Corals, are popular LPS corals known for their vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and hardy nature. While the two genera look very similar, both offer excellent colour contrast and texture, making them a fantastic addition to almost any reef aquarium.
Lighting
Low to moderate lighting is ideal for Favia and Favites corals. They can adapt to higher light levels when properly acclimated, but excessive lighting may cause colour loss or tissue stress.
Flow
Low to moderate flow works best. Gentle water movement helps remove waste and deliver nutrients while allowing the coral's tissue to remain fully expanded.
Avoid placing them in areas with strong, direct flow that may damage tissue or inhibit feeding.
Feeding
Although Favia and Favites receive most of their energy through photosynthesis, they benefit from occasional feeding.
Placement
These corals can be placed on the sand bed or within the lower to middle sections of the rockwork.
Provide enough room around the colony, particularly as it grows. Both Favia and Favites can develop long sweeper tentacles after lights out.
Tank Mates
Favia and Favites are considered semi-aggressive corals. At night, they can extend sweeper tentacles capable of stinging nearby corals.
Allow several centimetres of space between them and neighbouring corals to prevent aggression and tissue damage.
Final Thoughts
Favia and Favites corals are excellent choices for both beginner and experienced reef keepers. Their bright colours, unique maze-like patterns, and relatively forgiving care requirements make them a rewarding addition to most reef aquariums. With moderate lighting, gentle flow, stable parameters, and occasional feeding, they can grow into beautiful colonies that become a standout feature in your tank.
