Green Star Polyps are a hardy and fast-growing soft coral known for their bright green, grass-like polyps. Once settled, they can quickly spread across rockwork and create an impressive carpet of colour and movement.

LIGHTING

Moderate lighting is ideal, although Green Star Polyps are pretty adaptable and can handle a range of lighting levels.
Under stronger lighting they will often develop brighter colour and more compact growth. As with most corals, introduce them gradually to higher-intensity lighting.

FLOW

Moderate to strong, indirect flow works well.
Good water movement helps keep debris from settling on the purple mat and encourages the polyps to sway naturally. Avoid placing them directly in front of a powerful wavemaker where they’re being constantly blasted.

FEEDING

Green Star Polyps receive most of their energy from light through their symbiotic algae, so direct feeding isn’t usually necessary.
They can also take advantage of fine suspended nutrients and coral foods already present in the aquarium.

PLACEMENT

GSP can be placed in the lower to middle areas of the aquarium, depending on your lighting and flow.
The biggest thing to think about is growth. Green Star Polyps can spread very quickly, including onto neighbouring rocks and around other corals.
For easier control, try placing the colony on its own isolated rock or island. This lets you enjoy the carpet effect without having it take over the main rockwork.
WATER QUALITY

Green Star Polyps are quite forgiving, but stable reef conditions will give you the best colour, growth and polyp extension. Aim for:
Temperature: 24–26°C
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1400 ppm
Nitrate: Low to moderate
Phosphate: Low but detectable
They’re generally more tolerant of nutrient levels than many SPS corals, but stability is still more important than chasing perfect numbers.
TANK MATES

Green Star Polyps are suitable for most mixed reef aquariums.
Their main issue isn’t aggression through stinging, but their ability to grow over surrounding rockwork and potentially crowd neighbouring corals. Leave some space around the colony and trim back the mat when necessary.
POLYPS CLOSED?

Don’t panic if your Green Star Polyps occasionally stay closed for a while, especially after being moved or disturbed.
They may also close if debris builds up on the colony or if aquarium conditions suddenly change. Good water movement and stable parameters usually help keep them open and looking their best.
FINAL THOUGHTS

Green Star Polyps are a hardy, colourful and beginner-friendly soft coral that can add amazing movement to a reef tank. Give them moderate lighting, plenty of flow and stable water conditions and they can grow incredibly well.
Just keep an eye on their spread. An isolated GSP island is one of the easiest ways to keep this fast-growing coral under control.
